Having used a number of these plugins and others like them I’ve eventually settled on the one that comes with Jetpack; mainly because it’s the only one I’ve found that lets you show the icons for each post on post lists/archives with minimal extra overhead.

Socialize is my preferred plugin – it’s got a ton of customization options, like button order, and it can also insert a call to action box with sharing buttons at the bottom of your posts/pages. You can even override button options on a per-post/page basis. The admin panel does take some getting used to, though.

Thanks Doug that looks interesting mate I’m checking it out.

Thanks, Dan. The review was really neat. However, as you mentioned, no plugin satisfies all of our requirements and so, unfortunately, my search continues.

Let me know what you find!

Thanks for this social sharing plugin list Dan. I have 2 quick questions for you about Digg Digg, which I hope you can help with. Will it import the old share count from a previous plugin (Get Social)? And when you say it doesn’t display on mobiles, does that include IPad? Meaning it would be a good thing if you have a problem, as I do, with the share bar sitting on top of the content and making it un-readable.
    Thanks again!

Hey Ethan, yeah the share totals come from the API’s of the various networks so the totals should be the same regardless of what plugin you use. That is unless the plugin itself has some sort of inbuilt calculation like a combined total or something. It seems a bit inconsistent on mobiles, most of the time it doesn’t display at all, but sometimes it does and doesn’t look good.
